UAE VISA GUIDE

UAE Visa Cancellation Grace Period

What to do after your visa is cancelled, how long you can stay and how to avoid fines.

Passport and immigration documents for UAE visa cancellation

When a UAE residence visa is cancelled, the holder usually receives a limited period to leave the country, change status or obtain a new visa. This period is commonly called the cancellation grace period. The exact allowance depends on the visa category, the date of cancellation and the latest immigration rules.

Because grace periods can differ, always check the cancellation paper, ICP or GDRFA records and the instructions issued by your sponsor or visa centre.

What is the grace period?

The grace period is the time after cancellation during which you may remain in the UAE without being treated as an overstayer. It is not an automatic extension of your residence visa. Once the permitted period ends, daily overstay penalties may apply unless you have changed status, exited the UAE or received another valid immigration permission.

How many days are allowed?

There is no single grace period for every resident. Some categories may receive a short period, while other professional, family, investor or special residence categories may have a longer allowance. The period may also depend on whether the cancellation is linked to an employment visa, dependent visa or another residence type.

Important: Do not rely on general online numbers. Confirm the exact last date shown in your official immigration record.

What can you do during the grace period?

  • Leave the UAE before the final permitted date.
  • Apply for a new employment, family, investor, tourist or other eligible visa.
  • Complete an in-country status change if your new visa category allows it.
  • Arrange passport, flight, insurance or document requirements for your next application.
  • Settle outstanding fines, loans, tenancy matters and other obligations before departure.

What happens if you overstay?

Overstaying can lead to daily fines, difficulty obtaining a new visa and delays at immigration. The total amount depends on the applicable regulations and the length of the overstay. If you realise that your deadline has passed, check your record immediately and seek guidance on fines, exit arrangements or a status change.

Documents to keep ready

  • Passport and Emirates ID, if available.
  • Visa cancellation confirmation or reference number.
  • New offer letter, entry permit or change-of-status documents.
  • Travel booking and proof of accommodation, when leaving the UAE.
  • Copies of sponsor, employer or dependent documents where relevant.

Practical advice

Ask your sponsor to confirm the cancellation date in writing and save a copy of the official record. Start your next application early because medical tests, insurance, Emirates ID processing and approvals can take time. Avoid booking travel based only on an informal message or an estimated date.

Frequently asked questions

No. You must have valid work authorisation and a valid residence or employment status before starting work for a new employer.

Can I travel while applying for a new visa?
Possibly, but travel can affect an in-country application. Confirm the conditions with the relevant authority or visa centre before leaving.

Where can I confirm my deadline?
Check your cancellation document and the relevant ICP or GDRFA record for the emirate and visa type involved.
